Preparing the Box Portion

Choose a large white cardboard box that will cover the child's body from shoulders to upper legs, sufficiently deep to fit around the child's body comfortably. The open side of the box will be in the back, and the child will get in and out of the costume through this. The large pair of flaps on the box will open and close like doors, and be held closed with white cotton cord, tied in a bow.

On the back of the box, where the "doors" will be, remove the smaller bottom flap of cardboard. Run duct tape all around the inside of the box at the edges and corners, so that when the leg and head areas uggs uk are cut out, the cardboard won't tear down the sides due to stress from movement. Cut out the rest of the bottom of the box where the legs will be, so that one whole end of the box is removed. On the outside of the box, use duct tape or wide colored tape (note the orange and black vertical line in the photo) to seal the front flaps closed.

Cut out the hole for the head and neck to fit through. Do not make the hole too wide, because the box is meant to rest on the child's shoulders. Reinforce the opening with duct tape inside. Try the costume on the child and plan where to put the foam padding. It should uggs uk outlet be cut to size and taped to the headend of the box so that the child's shoulders have plenty of padding between the box top and the tops of the shoulders. If there is room, additional padding can be taped inside the box near the chest so that the box will not rock forward and back, banging the knees when walking.

Find or buy a length of dryer hose long enough to make 4 arms. The child's own arms will operate the forward pair of arms and the robot's side arms can be ornamental. It should be easy for the child to pull his arms out of any of the armholes, but his hands will probably not be able to reach the gloves on the side arms. Try the box on the child and plan where to cut the armholes. Make the holes, then reinforce on the inside of the box with duct tape.

Divide the length of dryer hose into 4 arm sections. Push one end of each arm section into its arm hole and secure inside with duct tape, or tie the wires into place with cord by poking a few small holes into the box around the arm holes and lacing the dryer hose into place with permanent knots. Use duct tape to secure any pointy ends of the dryer hose wire to the box. Choose two pairs of old winter gloves and stitch the wrists to the free ends of the robot arms.

Use a plastic costume helmet (check thrift shops and yard sales) that will fit the child. Old football helmets can be used as well. Cover the outside of the helmet with heavyduty silver foil and tape in place with duct tape. Open up the white plastic garbage bag and shorten the length of it, then cut out a small hole for the head. Before the child puts on the main costume, he will don the garbage bag so that it covers his clothing from shoulders to neck. The child should wear long pants and boots with this costume. If trickortreating outdoors in cold weather, a jacket can easily be worn underneath the costume box.

Use colored markers and crayons to decorate the front of the box with buttons, dials and gauges. Tie on a plastic slinky as shown in the photo. Poke two small holes in the box above each shoulder and a larger hole in the bottom of each clear plastic ball. Run a wire with a red LED light into each plastic ball and duct tape the balls in place. Put the other end of each wire through the small hole in the box and attach to a battery taped to the inside where the body does not come in contact. One safe location is the far corner of each shoulder, where the padding ends. Finally, poke holes in the "back door" of the costume and tie strings of white cord to each side, which will be used to tie the "doors" shut once the child is wearing the costume.

This robot costume is sure to win prizes in any classroom Halloween parade! If the child's arms get tired from holding them out in front of the body, he can pull out of the robot arms and keep his arms at his sides for a rest. Any child wearing this costume while holding out a trickortreat bag is sure to receive lots of good "input" from the neighbors!
